Detroit Bikes Acquired by Beacon Manufacturing in Strategic Deal

Detroit-based Cardinal Cycling Group has recently completed the sale of Detroit Bikes to Beacon Manufacturing, led by the former’s general manager, Gary Thornton. Beacon Manufacturing is set to pivot the iconic bicycle brand towards prototyping and logistics services for light electric vehicle (LEV) manufacturers, under the leadership of Thornton, a seasoned industry veteran who expressed enthusiasm for the transition.

Gary Thornton, now CEO of Beacon, noted, “We’ve pivoted from being a manufacturer of sub-$1,000 commuter bikes to working with smaller companies bringing LEVs to market.” Beacon’s modern capabilities include CNC, laser-cutting, laser-welding, and 3D-printing, positioning the company to drive innovation in the EV sector.
Meanwhile, Cardinal has refocused its efforts on domestic composite manufacturing, with CEO Tony Karklins stating, “Cardinal is focused on carbon; we won’t be doing anything else in metal.” The company has retained significant Detroit Bikes inventory, valued at approximately $500,000, and is strategically seeking buyers within identified markets.
The sale marks a significant chapter for Detroit Bikes and Cardinal as both brands embrace distinct pathways for future growth and innovation in urban mobility and manufacturing.
This strategic deal not only reflects industry-wide shifts towards diversification and adaptability but also signifies an exciting and transformative future for the global cycling and mobility industry.
